THE USM CIVIL ENGINEERING CONCRETE CANOE TEAM EXCELLED IN THE JPS CONCRETE CANOE COMPETITION 2007

The USM's Civil Engineering concrete canoe team called "BADANG" gave an outstanding performance in the recent "JPS Concrete Canoe Competition 2007" which took place on 14 & 15 December 2007, at Cyberjaya Lake & Park. The event was organized by the Drainage and Irrigation Department of Malaysia (JPS) to commemorate its 75th year anniversary. Ten teams participated in the competition, namely; JPS-UiTM, UM, UKM, UTM, USM, UNITEN, UTTAR, UNISEL, UTP and UPM.

Represented by twelve USM's Civil Engineering students, the team members have put their utmost effort and commitment as well as superb teamwork spirit to design and construct their concrete canoe. In a period of about one month, they were able to construct two concrete canoes which they called "Badang". The canoes with approximate weight of 160 kg each, were made from lightweight fibre reinforced concrete with fine wire mesh as the primary reinforcement.

Judging of product and floatation test were conducted on 14 December 2007. "Badang" passed the floatation test with flying colours. Unfortunately there were cases of sunken canoes and one case of broken canoe from other participating teams. The actual competition took place on 15 December 2007. The competition was organized in two stages, namely preliminary rounds (heat) and final stages. In the morning, the heat event was held where "Badang" has to compete with superlight canoe from UNISEL weighing less than 60 kg and two other canoes from UM and JPS-UiTM. With extraordinary spirit, "Badang" managed to secure 1st place for women sprint event and 2nd place for other events, namely; man sprint, man endurance, woman endurance and mixed endurance. . Hence, "Badang" qualified to take part in all categories of the final competition.

In the final competition, once again USM paddlers showed their "Badang" spirit together with the team's motto "dare to challenge". They secured 1st place in woman sprint and man endurance, and 2nd place in man sprint, woman endurance and mixed endurance. In addition, USM team also secured third place in the best final product category. In total, the team took home around RM5,000.00 in prize money, besides trophies, plaque and certificate of participation. Well done "Badang" !!!!. Siapa Kita !!!, Badang!!!, Siapa Kita!!!, Badang!!!, Siapa Kita!!!, Badang!!!, Badang !!! Badang !!! Badang!!!. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE EXPEMPLARY SPIRIT SHOWN BY THE STUDENTS. THANK YOU TO PPKA'S STAFF WHO HAVE WORKED EQUALLY HARD TO SUPPORT THE TEAM.
